Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Popley

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps where slates or tiles have gone and storm damage on steep or tall roofs.

Older cottages and houses around Popley may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

How it works

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Parking around Popley is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that.

What we are asked to look at in Popley

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Problems in those places frequently go unseen until they leak.

People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack

If you look after a building such as St Bede's Catholic Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • Are they insured for the work?

What to expect from a roof survey

Why it is worth a survey now in Popley

Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Finding them now means less to put right. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Popley, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.

Popley questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Popley?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is my home in Popley listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

What happens next?

You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, let us know when booking.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

Drone roof surveys in Popley: local notes

Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

The Vyne lies about 1.6 miles north, so building around Popley goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Gabriel's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Popley is about 2 miles north-east of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Popley gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Across Hampshire, we cover Popley. We also survey roofs in Reading.

Can I check my roof myself?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
