Chimney survey in Popley, Hampshire
An experienced roof surveyor for chimney surveys in Popley. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys.
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Flaunching that has broken away
- Eroded joints in the brickwork
Signs you need a chimney survey in Popley
Flaunching is the mortar bed that holds the pots and throws water off the top. Once it cracks, water gets in and frost makes the cracks bigger. Loose pots can follow.
We are often asked to look at:
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
- Damp on a chimney breast inside
- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Cracked or missing flaunching
For an older house near a landmark like St Gabriel's Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

About our chimney survey in Popley
If you’re buying a home with chimneys, it is worth knowing their condition before you exchange. On older stacks, we often find cracked flaunching, loose flashings and worn pointing. Our report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. It works alongside a RICS home survey, not instead of one. We’re often asked to look into a chimney out of line and frost-damaged brickwork on the stack, across shared and party-wall stacks, lead flashings and chimney pots and cowls.
Trees around homes in smaller places like Popley drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls, and moss holds water against tiles. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.
The report records the chimney stack as we found it on the day. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Questions from Popley
I let a flat near Basingstoke station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Popley?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?
We inspect from wherever is safe: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the roof space. Our Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies. We note anything we couldn’t see.
Which parts of the chimney do you look at?
The whole stack, as far as it can safely be seen: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings. Leaning, unused stacks and damp on chimney breasts are recorded too.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Do you cover Popley?
Yes. We cover Popley and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and the South East. To book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney pots and cowls
A loose or cracked pot can fall from height. We photograph each pot and note any damage.
Lead flashings
Lead flashings seal the joint between the stack and the roof. The survey looks at whether the lead is tight, sound and well fixed.
DIY checks: what’s safe
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Why act early in Popley
Loose pots and bricks on a stack are a safety concern. A survey picks them out so they can be made safe by a suitable contractor. In an older home around Popley, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

What we do, step by step
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Popley is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- You let us know how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- Each chimney is viewed from wherever it can be seen safely.
- Every part we can see is looked at: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings.
- We check the chimney breasts and the stack in the roof space where we can reach them.
- You get a photo-illustrated written report and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Local roofs in Popley
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. The Vyne, about 1.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Popley. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Shop and office owners around The Malls may find that a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. For landlords with property near Basingstoke station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
