Airspace, weather and Chineham roofs
The Vyne, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Chineham. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
Anyone responsible for a site like Four Lanes Community Junior School will know that big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. Shop and office owners around The Malls may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.
Chineham is about 3 miles north-east of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Chineham gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Our Hampshire coverage includes Chineham and the places around it. Reading is in our area too.
Surveys in RG24 and RG27 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on Bowman Road, Cufaude Lane and Cibbons Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Chineham is on the A33, which makes it simple to reach. We also cover the places around Chineham: Lychpit (1 mile south), Wildmoor (1 mile east), Popley (1 mile west), Old Basing (2 miles south) and Water End (2 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Basingstoke (3 miles south-west), Farnborough (12 miles east), Fleet (9 miles east), Aldershot (13 miles east), Alton (10 miles south) and Yateley (10 miles east).

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Chineham
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you’ve noticed tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Older cottages and houses around Chineham may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Common questions in Chineham
Are there drone restrictions around Chineham?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
Is my home in Chineham listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you look in the loft space?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside cannot, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.
How long is the visit?
Expect it to take between one and two hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we will explain what’s needed.
How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Chineham?
Just ring 07833 053749 or email us. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
Honest limits
We only report what can be seen safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- A structural engineer’s report
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.
Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference. Our tips:
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Let us know the exact address as you book
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.
Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Chineham
Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Chineham. For a price for a let property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
When to book a survey in Chineham
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
Common reasons to book include:
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
Take an older house close to Christ Church Chineham: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

How it works
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Chineham, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
