When you need someone else

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • A promise that the roof will not leak
  • Repair costs for putting snags right
  • Nails and clips under the slates or tiles

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

New roof snagging for homes and businesses in Chineham

A snag is a fault or unfinished detail left when work is done. On a roof, snags are frequently at the edges and junctions where the work is most fiddly. We check everything we can see safely and photograph each snag. Typical snags include loose ridge tiles, poorly dressed flashings and debris left in gutters. We survey ridges and verges, flashings and valleys and new-build homes, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are offcuts and broken tiles left behind and gaps at new flashings.

In a smaller place like Chineham, some houses face open ground, so their roofs may take more wind and driving rain. Ridges, verges and flashings are where that weather normally shows first. For a purchase or a new roof, those exposed edges are checked closely. On an exposed roof, a loose ridge or verge soon becomes a bigger job.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

For landlords and managing agents

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

How it works

Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Being in a smaller place like Chineham doesn’t change how the visit works: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. First, we note any deadlines and concerns.
  2. We inspect as far as safe access allows.
  3. Each detail at ridges, verges, valleys and flashings is looked at.
  4. Debris and damage to other parts are recorded.
  5. You receive a report to share with your roofer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Jot down any questions you want answered

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Related advice

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Look for marks or cracks left by the work
  • Check before your warranty period ends
  • Look for debris left in gutters from the ground
  • Let your roofer know an inspection is planned

The report lists each snag with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can send it straight to your roofer.

Keep the final payment until the roof has been checked if your contract allows it. It keeps the job open until it is right.

Chineham homes and their roofs

The Vyne, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Chineham. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each material has its own typical faults, which is what a buyer or the owner of a new roof needs to know about.

If you live in an older home near Christ Church Chineham, a survey will show how the roof has been repaired before, which helps you judge what’s coming.

Your questions about new roof snagging in Chineham

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chineham?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Chineham?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you deal with my roofer if there is a problem?

No. We report on what we see. A disagreement about the work is between you and them, and the report gives you a clear record to refer to.

What does a new roof inspection cost?

Our packages start from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email for a price.

Can you survey in bad weather?

Light rain is typically fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In high wind or heavy rain, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.

How do I book a survey in Chineham?

To book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you want to find out. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.

Do you need new roof snagging in Chineham?

Even good roofers can leave snags at the end of a job. Details at ridges, verges and flashings are easy to rush particularly in poor weather.

Problems we come across frequently include:

  • Flashings not properly dressed or fixed
  • Underlay not dressed into the gutter
  • Untidy or loose verge details
  • Loose or badly finished ridge tiles

Landlords with a home close to Basingstoke station may find that a written report helps before buying a rental or paying for a new roof on one.

  • What they won’t be able to tell you

What’s in a roof survey

Can I check my roof myself?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
