About our drone roof survey in Shirrell Heath
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and fragile roofs, and people most frequently book us about ponding and splits on a high flat roof and ridge and hip pieces working loose.
In a village or hamlet like Shirrell Heath, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. Close-up photos show what’s really there. It is far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Shirrell Heath, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Practical tips
Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.
Questions from Shirrell Heath
Is drone flying allowed in Shirrell Heath?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Will you come out to Shirrell Heath?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
What will the report tell me?
A written report with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.
When to book a survey in Shirrell Heath
Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically. You see the whole roof, not just the parts near an access point.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St John, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Will the report include photos?
- What experience they bring
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- Are they insured for the work?
What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older roofs in small places like Shirrell Heath can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

What this survey can’t tell you
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- A structural engineer’s report
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Fragile roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
What you can safely check yourself
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Drones, thermal imaging and Shirrell Heath roofs
What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
If you look after a building like St John the Baptist Church of England Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
