Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Swanmore
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Common reasons to book are tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.
Around Swanmore, lots of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you can’t see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What we do, step by step
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey normally takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Swanmore, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Leave it or get it looked at?
Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. With lower homes, common in places like Swanmore, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Useful tips for Swanmore property owners
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.
What we cannot see
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- A structural engineer’s report
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors

Drones, thermal imaging and Swanmore roofs
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.
Take an older house close to Church of St Barnabas: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Swanmore Church of England Aided Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

For landlords and managing agents
Letting agents and landlords in Swanmore book surveys as well as householders. A report with photographs gives you a clear record of the roof.
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
Checking the roof from ground level
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Questions from Swanmore
Will you come out to Swanmore?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
How do I find out if my home in Swanmore is listed?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The flight waits for better weather. Wind and heavy rain are the two things that ground a small drone, so a new date is agreed with you.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.
Can you fly a drone near an airport?
Near airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and Stansted, flight restriction zones apply. We check your address and ask for permission where it’s required. If it isn’t given, we inspect by other means.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
