DIY checks: what’s safe
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Drone roof survey in Hundred Acres
A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it’s safe, since that is where leaks and condensation frequently show first. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft can’t be reached safely, we note it. If you’re worried about ridge pieces that have lifted and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs on upper floors, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs alike.
Some older homes in villages like Hundred Acres are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

Drone roof surveys in Hundred Acres: local notes
Hundred Acres lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from the ground, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
The streets around a church such as Church of St Nicholas are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Shop and office owners around Fareham Shopping Centre may find that big, flat commercial roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help most.

Different roofs, different checks
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically, so nothing is skipped.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. We photograph them closely, as far as the flight allows.
What this survey cannot tell you
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
Roofs we survey in Hundred Acres

Before and after the survey
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Let us know what you want to see
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Move stored items away from the hatch
There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.
How it works
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Older roofs in small places like Hundred Acres can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Related advice
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Hundred Acres
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hundred Acres?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
Do you cover smaller places like Hundred Acres?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
What will the report tell me?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
How long does the survey take?
It usually takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
