Drone roof survey in Gosport

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. High wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are hidden gutters full of leaves and plant growth and moss on the roof.

Somewhere as small as Gosport, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Practical tips

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:

  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Let us know the exact address when booking

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.

Gosport: your questions answered

Is my home in Gosport listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover smaller places like Gosport?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on neighbouring gardens or windows. We only survey what the owner has asked us to. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. It sees only the outer surfaces. Leaks, damp timbers and condensation often show first from inside, so we check the loft too where we can.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Drone roof surveys around Gosport

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council.

If you look after a building like Ampfield Church of England Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What we are asked to look at in Gosport

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mark, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof

What a good roof survey covers

What we do, step by step

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. On timing, it normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Gosport can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Why it is worth a survey now in Gosport

Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller, whatever height the roof is. Outbuildings and barns around Gosport are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the price for the job before booking.

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
