Drones, thermal imaging and Braishfield roofs

Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Historic houses such as Mottisfont Abbey, about 3.3 miles north-west, show how far back building around Braishfield goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Braishfield Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

About our drone roof survey in Braishfield

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. We’re often asked to look into worn lead at chimneys and walls and debris building up in hidden gutters, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs.

Some older homes in villages like Braishfield are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

Questions from Braishfield

Will you come out to Braishfield?

Yes, Braishfield is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is drone flying allowed in Braishfield?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.

What’s the best way to book?

It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof. Surveys run seven days a week.

How experienced are you?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

How much is a survey?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, and it is agreed before booking.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

The survey, step by step

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where applicable. The survey typically takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Braishfield can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

How to prepare

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

Surveys for landlords and agents in Braishfield

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as householders. A report with photos gives you a clear record of the roof.

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

What you can safely check yourself

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
