Independent roof leak investigations in Gosport

Roof leak investigations for homes and businesses in Gosport

Leaks tend to begin where one part of a roof meets another. Common entry points include chimney and wall flashings, valleys, parapet and box gutters, and the upstands and outlets on flat roofs. Each of these is checked in turn and we follow where the evidence leads. Every chimney, dormer and roof light adds more joints to check. We check all of them, from every safe vantage point. Common reasons to book are a leak that comes and goes with the weather and water marks that spread in wet weather, on flat roof details, valleys and parapet gutters and chimney stacks.

Many homes in small places like Gosport face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take between one and two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Gosport often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. We help you choose the package that suits the leak.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends.
  3. We inspect inside and out, starting from the stain.
  4. Moisture detection and thermal imaging are used where your package includes them and they help.
  5. The report explains the likely entry point and what needs attention.

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys

Leaves and moss build up in valleys and hold water back. During a downpour, water can back up under the coverings.

Flat roof upstands and outlets

Each flat roof relies on its outlets to drain. A blocked outlet leaves water standing, which tests every joint. We check outlets and the covering around them.

Common questions in Gosport

Do you cover smaller places like Gosport?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Do you cover Gosport?

Yes, Gosport is within the area we cover. We work right across London and the South East. You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Does the investigation include the repair?

Our job here is to trace the leak and explain it, and the repair is separate. With the report, a roofer knows exactly where to look.

What’s the best way to book?

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us the address and what you’d like to know. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

Why isn’t the leak directly above the stain?

Because water travels. It runs along rafters, battens or underlay before it drips, so the entry point is often well away from the mark. That’s why we trace the route rather than patching above the stain.

When you need someone else

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • Carrying out the fix
  • Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Rooflights and dormers
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flat roof details
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Lead flashings
  • The roof space
  • Chimney stacks

Do you need a roof leak investigation in Gosport?

A roof valley collects the rain from two slopes. Split linings, slipped valley tiles or debris can push water under the slates or tiles. The stain may appear well away from the valley itself.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Brown rings on upstairs ceilings
  • Condensation that looks like a leak
  • Damp ceilings under a flat roof
  • Staining where a gutter or parapet meets the wall

Take an older house close to Church of St Mark: old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Their track record with similar roofs

What’s in a roof survey

What affects the price in Gosport

Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Which survey package you book
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for technical words. Just let us know:

  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • What made you get in touch
  • The address and postcode of the property

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What a roof leak investigation looks like in Gosport

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Ampfield Church of England Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. If you own a rental within reach of Chandlers Ford station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
