Drone roof surveys around South Weirs

South Weirs lies within about 5 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

Anyone responsible for a site like Brockenhurst Church of England Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Take an older house close to Church of St Saviour: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

How a drone roof survey works in South Weirs

Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Common reasons to book are blocked valleys and parapet gutters and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

Older buildings in small places like South Weirs may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Common questions in South Weirs

Can you fly a drone over a roof in South Weirs?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Do you cover smaller places like South Weirs?

Yes, South Weirs is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

What’s in the survey report?

A report with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, with the most urgent first where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Will you check the loft?

Usually, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

How quickly is the report sent?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.

Roof by roof

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.

What we cannot see

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Older rural homes like those around South Weirs can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Advice

What happens if roof problems are left?

Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. They show the location and extent of each defect. Outbuildings and barns around South Weirs are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Common roof problems in South Weirs

Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

We’re frequently asked to look at:

  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack

Hotels and guest houses near South Weirs can’t easily close rooms for a leak.
