Hightown questions

Is Hightown within the area you cover?

Yes. Hightown is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Are there drone restrictions around Hightown?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

How long does the survey take?

Expect it to take between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the survey around it.

About our drone roof survey in Hightown

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. We survey fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and slates or tiles shifted by high winds.

Some older homes in villages like Hightown are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Drone roof surveys in Hightown: local notes

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St John the Baptist, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Avon Tyrrell House lies about 3 miles south, so building around Hightown goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

What happens on the day

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a village or hamlet like Hightown, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Tips from our surveys

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace

We email the report to you, with close-up photos from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Hightown?

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. It’s hard to tell from below what has shifted. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters

Take a building like Ringwood Junior School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Are they insured for the work?
  • Whether VAT is added on top

What’s in a roof survey

When you need someone else

We only report what can be seen safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
