About roof surveys in PO7

Our report is written in plain English, not jargon. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and we rank them by urgency where that helps. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report. Reports are sent by email. We survey flat roofs, chimney stacks and the roof space, and people most often book us about worn lead at chimneys and abutments and cracked mortar along the ridge.

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are.

  1. You tell us the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. We look at the roof from every safe viewpoint outside.
  4. Inside, we check the loft space where there is safe access.
  5. You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

How our prices work

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Why choose Independent Roof Survey

Local landmarks in Waterlooville

We work in homes and buildings around Saint George's, The Denmead Queen pub and Hart Plain Junior School and the streets around them. The closest station to Waterlooville is Bedhampton station, roughly 2.6 miles south-east. A little further out are Queen Alexandra Hospital (2.7 miles south-west) and Havant Museum (3.3 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Portsdown Hill and Southmoor Nature Reserve.

Roof surveys across PO7: local notes

In PO7, our roof surveys work takes in owners, landlords and managing agents, in Havant, Horndean and Waterlooville and well beyond. Each report sets out what was seen, with photographs and recommendations.

We work right across London and the South East, from the Isle of Wight to Hertfordshire, and PO7 is well within that. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. Parts of PO7 are on or near the coast, where roofs face more wind and more salt in the air than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose.

Waterlooville: Anyone responsible for a site like Hart Plain Junior School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Take an older house close to Saint George's: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • The roof’s overall size
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Getting in touch

A few details help us recommend the right survey and price. When you get in touch, it is useful to mention:

  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage

Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Useful tips for PO7 property owners

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • File the report with your home documents
  • Mention any damp patches as you book
  • Include dormers, porches and garages as you book
  • Stay off ladders and the roof

File the report with your other home documents. It gives you something to compare against later, and buyers may ask about the roof when you sell.

Every so frequently, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. Look for water marks, damp wood and chinks of light. Take photos of anything that changes.

Checking the roof from ground level

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

When you need someone else

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • The condition of the rest of the building (that’s a RICS home survey)
  • An exact number of years the roof has left
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets

Leave it or get it looked at?

Many roofs go years without anyone looking at them closely. Our report gives you a record of how the roof is today, so you can compare it next time.

What to check before booking

  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

Common questions in PO7

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Can you tell me how long my roof will last?

We do not put a figure on it, since the fixings, underlay and maintenance all play a part. What we do is explain the roof’s condition and what to deal with first.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Do you work in PO7?

Yes. We carry out roof surveys in PO7.

What do you check on a roof survey?

All the main parts of the roof: coverings, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and the loft. Higher packages add moisture detection, structural checks, thermal imaging and a drone where it applies.
