About roof surveys in PO6

Our roof surveys cover PO6 and the wider South East. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and bring 20+ years’ experience. Each survey ends with a written report, emailed with photographs and recommendations. Whether it is a house, a flat or a commercial building, the process is the same. To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email. We survey lead flashings, natural slate and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about ridge tiles that have lifted or moved and loose chimney pots.

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Green spaces nearby include Milton Locks and Portsdown Hill.

Homes and roofs across PO6

Across PO6, a good many older houses still have chimney stacks, used or not, and the lead and mortar around them need watching. Valleys, gutters and fixings follow close behind.

We survey roofs across London and South East England, and PO6 is part of that. Housing here runs from Victorian and Edwardian terraces to post-war new towns and modern estates. Parts of PO6 are coastal, so the weather on the day matters more for drone flights and roof access. If conditions are not right, the visit moves to a calmer day.

Portsmouth: Homes near green spaces such as Alexandra Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Manor Infant School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
  • Let us know about past leaks
  • Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
  • Gather any paperwork for past roof work

Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. The photos show what we found and where, which makes quotes easier to compare.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear of leaves and moss, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

How we price roof surveys

Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Booking your survey

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window

If you are buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or email us when you are ready.

What a survey does not cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
  • Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)

Signs you need a roof survey

A blocked gutter does more harm than it looks. Once leaves and moss block a gutter, water spills down the brickwork. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building, especially near trees.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
  • Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
  • Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
  • Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings

PO6: your questions answered

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

What if it rains on the day?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions aren’t right, we’ll talk to you about another date.

Does a roof survey replace a structural engineer?

No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and the Standard and Premium packages include a structural check. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and doesn’t include calculations.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Does someone need to be in?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access; we will agree the details as you book.

How soon is the report ready?

The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photographs.
