Roof survey in PO16: how it works
The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. Common reasons to book are worn lead at chimneys and abutments and worn or blocked valleys, across chimney stacks, natural slate and flat roofs.
We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys.
- You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where safe.
- We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations.

Local landmarks in Fareham
In Fareham, that means homes and buildings near Fareham Academy, Wykeham House School and The Lord Arthur Lee pub. Also close by are St John The Evangelist (less than half a mile south-east) and St Jude's Catholic Primary School (less than half a mile south-west). Fareham has its own railway station: Fareham station. Nearby you will also find Carron Row Farm Museum (1.7 miles west) and Knowle Hospital (2 miles north). Not far away are Portsdown Hill and West of the River Alver.
Homes and roofs across PO16
PO16 has everything from older homes with tall chimneys to modern estates. Sooner or later, every roof needs its gutters, flashings and coverings checked.
Across London and the South East, older homes often have slate or clay tiles, while many later ones have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed extensions and dormers are common everywhere. That variety shapes every survey in PO16. Near the sea in PO16, roofs face stronger wind and salt-laden air. Ridges and verges facing the sea are worth checking after every big storm.
Fareham: For businesses in and around places such as Fareham Shopping Centre, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. The streets around a church such as St John The Evangelist are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
Signs you need a roof survey
Weather is the main thing that wears a roof down. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and rain finds any gap it can. Small faults that start this way grow over time.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Torn or sagging underlay
- Valley linings that have cracked or split
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
- Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos.
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps when budgeting.
Checking the roof from ground level
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What a survey does not cover
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
What a survey costs
Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- The roof’s overall size
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Which survey package you book
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Helping us price your survey
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- What made you get in touch
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Questions from PO16
Do you inspect the roof from on top?
Only where it’s safe to do so. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where it applies.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when booking.
What’s the best way to book?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we will point you to the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos was banned in UK construction in 1999, so older buildings may have it. We flag materials that could contain it, and recommends a specialist asbestos surveyor looks at them.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
How long does a roof survey take?
On site, it typically takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
