Roof Survey in Hilsea
Find out the condition of the roof at your property in Hilsea from an independent roof surveyor. We visit on weekdays and at weekends.
- Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters
- Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
How it works
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Parking around Hilsea is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from the ground, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- We check the roof from every safe vantage point outside.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- We email a report with photographs and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
Roof survey in Hilsea
Our roof surveys cover Hilsea and the wider South East. Visits run seven days a week. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Whether it’s a house, a flat or a commercial building, the process is the same. When you’re ready to book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. If you’re worried about gutters that overflow in heavy rain and loose ridge or hip tiles, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on the roof space, flat roofs and natural slate alike.
Trees around homes in smaller places like Hilsea drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Keep the report with your property records
- Have details of recent roof work to hand
- Let us know about past leaks
- Stay off ladders and the roof
With the Standard Survey you get a follow-up consultation, while Premium includes a consultation in person. You can ask us about anything that is not clear.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.
Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Before you put a home on the market, it’s useful to know the roof’s condition. You’ll know what a buyer’s survey might pick up. Blocked gutters on homes around Hilsea overflow and soak walls, especially where trees overhang. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

How we price roof surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.
Helping us price your survey
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- What kind of property and roof it is
To book a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know the address and what’s prompted the survey. You will know the price before anything is booked.
Hilsea: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Hilsea is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is the coastal weather around Hilsea hard on roofs?
Often, yes. Hilsea is within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
What insurance do you have?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.
What do you check on a roof survey?
We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, along with the loft where it’s safe. You get a written report with photos and recommendations.
Do you go up on the roof?
When the roof and the conditions make it safe, yes. We also use views from ground level, windows and the roof space.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

What a roof survey looks like in Hilsea
Hilsea lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. Warblington Castle, about 4.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hilsea. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Francis' Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Trees in and around Alexandra Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Gatcombe Park Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
