Drone roof survey in Portsmouth: what you get

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. If you’ve noticed tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and plant growth and moss on the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

A place the size of Portsmouth has flats, offices, shops and schools with flat or low-pitched roofs. Water trapped under a flat covering can spread well beyond where it got in. Aerial photos show the whole roof at once, and anything a thermal image suggests is checked with moisture readings. Plant, rooflights and fragile panels can make a large roof unsafe to walk on.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

How it works

We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a place the size of Portsmouth, the building you want surveyed may be a house, a flat above a shop or a whole block. Let us know the type of building and who can let us in, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Getting a price

Booking is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and give us some details about the property and we’ll suggest the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

Advice

How we price drone roof surveys

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Getting in touch

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It is useful to include:

  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.

Drone roof surveys in Portsmouth: local notes

Portsmouth lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Portsmouth means lost rooms as well as repairs. For businesses in and around places like Tricorn Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help most. Take an older house close to St Wilfrid: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What you can safely check yourself

It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

FAQs for Portsmouth

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Portsmouth?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Portsmouth?

Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and Portsmouth is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we’ll explain what’s needed.

How fast do I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Will you check the loft?

Typically, if there is one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We’ll say if a specialist is needed.

Ridges and hips

The ridge takes wind from both sides. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
