FAQs for Kingston

Are there drone restrictions around Kingston?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Do you cover smaller places like Kingston?

Yes, Kingston is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Kingston?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

How many surveys have you done?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Can you survey in bad weather?

A survey can normally go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Strong wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so if conditions are not right we’ll arrange another day with you.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Kingston

We carry out drone roof surveys in Kingston and across London and the South East, subject to airspace checks and the weather. We fly seven days a week. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. The report includes the drone photos and our recommendations. To check whether your roof suits a drone survey, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Typical surveys look at standing water on a flat roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, across tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Around Kingston, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you can’t see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from ground level.

After the visit, you get a written report with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we look for on each type of roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey does not add damage.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It usually takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. A visit to a smaller place like Kingston is no different on the day: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Drones, thermal imaging and Kingston roofs

Kingston is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Kingston. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

If you look after a building like Miltoncross Academy, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Hotels and guest houses near Kingston can’t easily close rooms for a leak. If you live in an older home near Church of St Cuthbert, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Kingston is about 1 mile south-east of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. In Kingston, as across Portsmouth, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our Portsmouth coverage includes Kingston.

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
