Our drone roof survey service in Portsmouth
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, fragile roofs and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are standing water on a flat roof and lead work pulling away at abutments.
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it usually takes an hour or two for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
What you will pay

Drones, thermal imaging and roofs across Portsmouth
In Portsmouth, every drone flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, from Southsea, Milton and Landport to the quieter places in between. Where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.
We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Portsmouth is part of that. London and South East England have homes from every era, from period terraces to post-war new towns and new estates. Parts of Portsmouth are on or near the coast, where roofs face more wind and more salt in the air than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose.
Portsmouth: For businesses in and around places like Tricorn Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Portsmouth means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do.
Practical tips
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.
Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
Checking the roof from ground level
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Bigger roofs take more time.
How we price drone roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- House, block, shop or office
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.
Getting in touch
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
Roof by roof
Large commercial roofs
Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.
Portsmouth: your questions answered
Are you registered with the CAA?
Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We use a sub-250g drone, flown within the rules for the open category.
Do you work in Portsmouth?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Portsmouth.
How long does a drone roof survey take?
On site, it normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
What about my neighbours’ privacy?
Privacy is taken seriously on every flight. The camera is pointed at your roof, not next door. Letting neighbours know in advance helps.
