Drone roof surveys in Tipner

Drone roof survey in Tipner

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.

In smaller places like Tipner, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from ground level.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Common roof problems in Tipner

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. From the ground, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves

Take a building like Stamshaw Infant Academy: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What follow-up you get after the report

What to expect from a roof survey

Why act early in Tipner

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Around Tipner, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than the original defect.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

Why book with us

  • Surveys on weekdays and at weekends
  • Satisfaction rate of 98%
  • Over 5,000 surveys carried out

What happens on the day

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Homes around Tipner often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

FAQs for Tipner

Is my home in Tipner listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover smaller places like Tipner?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

In some places, only with permission. Restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs need NATS permission before a flight. Every address is checked first.

How soon will I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, tell us when booking.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access.

Airspace, weather and Tipner roofs

Tipner is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

The streets around a church such as St Saviour's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Shop and office owners around Tricorn Centre may find that large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.

Tipner is about 1 mile north-west of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. Whether the building in Tipner is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Across Portsmouth, we cover Tipner and the places around it.

Tips that help

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn

Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Findings are set out in plain English, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

What this survey can’t tell you

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. What our survey covers.
