How a thermal roof survey works in Waterlooville

Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. It’s important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey flat roofs, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces, and people most often book us about leaks far from where the stain appears and water getting in at parapets and stacks.

In older houses around Waterlooville, loft insulation can be thin, patchy or missing in places. A thermal camera shows those cold and warm patches, and some of them can point to moisture. What it shows is surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Results depend on conditions, so the timing of the visit matters.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Questions from Waterlooville

Do you cover Waterlooville?

Yes, Waterlooville is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Waterlooville as anywhere else.

Is there anything to prepare before you come to Waterlooville?

The main thing is access, inside and out, plus somewhere to park in Waterlooville. It also helps to know about any leaks or earlier repairs.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Which survey includes thermal imaging?

Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It’s a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source cannot be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Different roofs, different checks

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

On larger commercial single-ply roofs, thermal imaging can help target moisture readings. That makes the survey more focused.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Waterlooville

Trapped water can harm decks, timbers and ceilings the longer it stays. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. A defect spotted early can be planned and budgeted for, while one found after water comes through normally has to be dealt with in a hurry, in Waterlooville as anywhere.

Thermal roof surveys around Waterlooville

Waterlooville lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and coastal wind can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Warblington Castle lies about 4 miles south-east, so building around Waterlooville goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hart Plain Junior School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. The streets around a church such as Saint George's are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Waterlooville is about 6 miles north of Portsmouth, in Hampshire. Wherever you are in Waterlooville, we can carry out thermal roof surveys at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Tips from our surveys

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Make sure the loft can be reached safely
  • Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Photograph damp patches with the date

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.

Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water doesn’t sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces

What a survey costs

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

Helping us price your survey

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just tell us:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

The survey, step by step

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where applicable. The survey usually takes between one and two hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a visit in Waterlooville, we need access to the loft, any rooms with leaks or stains, and the outside of the building. If there’s a side gate or a rear garden, let us know how to reach it. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before the survey

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
