Need a thermal roof survey in Cowplain?

What happens on the day

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a smaller place like Cowplain, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from the ground, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Before we arrive

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Check pets are kept safely away

How a thermal roof survey works in Cowplain

On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, which is hard to judge by eye. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. Typical surveys look at damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and damp around roof outlets and upstands, on insulated roof spaces, ceilings below the roof and loft conversions.

Around Cowplain, plenty of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. Blocked gutters on homes around Cowplain overflow and soak walls. It is easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

How the survey changes by roof type

Loft insulation

In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We look where there is safe access.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

How we price thermal roof surveys

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Which survey package you book
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What to let us know when you get in touch

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • What made you get in touch
  • The kind of building and roof involved

When you are ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or email us. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.

Thermal roof surveys around Cowplain

Cowplain lies within about 4 miles of the sea. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Warblington Castle, about 4.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Cowplain. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Anyone responsible for a site like Woodcroft Primary will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near The Hart Plain Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Cowplain is about 1 mile south-west of Horndean, in Hampshire. From houses to flats and shops in Cowplain, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Cowplain is one of the places in Hampshire where we work for thermal roof surveys. Portsmouth is in our area too.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces

Questions from Cowplain

Is Cowplain within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Is my home in Cowplain listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

What happens after the survey?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source can’t be confirmed, we will say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.
