Havant Thermal Roof Survey
An experienced roof surveyor for thermal roof surveys in Havant. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
What we do, step by step
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about one to two hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In Havant, many roofs join a neighbour’s, so we check what can be seen of the shared parts from your side. Let us know about any known leaks, past repairs or building work when you book, so time on site goes where it’s needed.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Havant
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. We survey loft conversions, ceilings below the roof and insulated roof spaces, and people most frequently book us about damp that repairs haven’t cured and thin or uneven insulation in the roof.
In a town like Havant, the roofs that are hardest to see are frequently on taller buildings, steep slopes or the backs of terraces. Close-up drone photos and thermal images show what binoculars from the pavement cannot. Both depend on the weather on the day, so the date is set with the forecast in mind. A typical example is the rear slope over a back addition, which can’t be seen from the street.
After the visit, you get a report with photographs, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Havant: your questions answered
Do you cover Havant?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Havant as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Havant?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
How long is the visit?
Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email.
When to book a survey in Havant
People often book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. A leak may start well away from where the stain appears. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
We’re often asked to look at:
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Stains that keep coming back
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
The streets around a church like St Francis are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
- What insurance they carry
- How long the report takes to arrive

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Insulated roof spaces
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs

Checking the roof from ground level
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.
Airspace, weather and Havant roofs
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Havant, and coastal wind can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Historic houses such as Warblington Castle, about 1.5 miles south-east, show how far back building around Havant goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. If you look after a building such as Trosnant Infant School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
