FAQs for Ropley

How do I find out if my home in Ropley is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Ropley?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you work in Ropley?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Ropley.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take an hour or two on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You’ll then get the report by email.

What happens after the survey?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Drone roof survey in Ropley

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we will say so. We survey tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs, and people most often book us about moss and weeds taking hold up top and lifted or split lead flashings.

Villages like Ropley frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Honest limits

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Why act early in Ropley

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. Around Ropley, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

Why us?

  • An independent view of the roof
  • Drones and thermal imaging where it applies
  • Photographs and a written report every time
  • Customer satisfaction of 98%

Take a look at what a roof survey costs and two real surveys.

Checking the roof from the ground

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

What we do, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere as small as Ropley, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets in another room

Advice

What a drone roof survey looks like in Ropley

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. About 4 miles south-west lies Hinton Ampner House, a reminder of how long the area around Ropley has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you look after a building such as Ropley Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Peter, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Ropley is about 7 miles south-west of Alton, in Hampshire. If you are in Ropley, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: a call or an email, a price, then a date. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire. You can also see our page for Southampton.

For landlords and managing agents

Landlords, agents and building managers in Ropley and across Hampshire can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.
