Drone roof survey in Rake: what you get

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it’s safe, since that’s where leaks and condensation frequently show first. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there’s no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most often book us about outlets choked with leaves and silt and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below.

Somewhere as small as Rake, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Common questions in Rake

Is Rake within the area you cover?

Yes. Rake is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Rake?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

What happens next?

You’ll receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.

Useful tips for Rake property owners

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn

Your report arrives by email, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

How it works

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes an hour or two for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Rural addresses near Rake can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Note where any stains or damp appear

Advice

Drone roof surveys in Rake: local notes

Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Take a building like Rake CofE Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. The streets around a church such as Rake Mission Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Rake is about 4 miles north-east of Petersfield, in Hampshire. Rake is part of the area we cover across London and South East England. Rake is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover for drone roof surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Which survey package you book
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The size of the roof

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What we can’t see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour
  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

Roofs we survey in Rake

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs

What happens if roof problems are left?

With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
