Drone roof survey in Durrants

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are gaps where slates or tiles have gone and blocked valleys and parapet gutters.

Some older homes in villages like Durrants are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

Drone roof surveys around Durrants

Durrants lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

If you look after a building like Havant Academy, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you live in an older home near St John the Baptist, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Durrants is about 2 miles north-east of Havant, in Hampshire. We cover Durrants and the rest of Hampshire. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

We survey roofs across the PO9 postcode area for drone roof surveys and the streets around it. You’ll find streets such as Whichers Close, Whichers Gate Road and Durrants Road, and we cover them all. If you are just outside Durrants, we cover Rowlands Castle (1 mile north), Leigh Park (1 mile south-west), Havant (2 miles south-west), Denvilles (2 miles south) and Westbourne (2 miles south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Gosport (10 miles south-west), Fareham (10 miles west), Horndean (3 miles north-west), Hedge End (15 miles west), Waterlooville (3 miles west) and Petersfield (9 miles north).

Durrants: your questions answered

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Durrants?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Is my home in Durrants listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

When does the report arrive?

Each package has its own report time. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, let us know when you book.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

What if it rains on the day?

Light rain is usually fine; heavy rain and wind are different. Strong wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. We photograph them closely, as far as the flight allows.

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. We check outlets and photograph any build-up.

Useful tips for Durrants property owners

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. You can ask about anything that is not clear.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

What we’re asked to look at in Durrants

Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. From above, they’re easy to see.

People usually book a survey after spotting one of these:

  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack

With Warblington Castle about 2.5 miles south, the area around Durrants has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.

Before booking anyone

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report

What to expect from a roof survey

For landlords and managing agents

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.

How the survey works

It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit usually takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a small place like Durrants, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

Checking the roof from ground level

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
