How a drone roof survey works in Newton Valence

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. If you are worried about lead work pulling away at abutments and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Some older homes in villages like Newton Valence are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Useful tips for Newton Valence property owners

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Move stored items away from the hatch

Your report arrives by email, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.

The survey, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Newton Valence, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area, so nothing is skipped.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.

What you can safely check yourself

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Newton Valence questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Newton Valence?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will you come out to Newton Valence?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Will you photograph next door’s garden?

We point the camera at your roof only. Next door’s windows and gardens are kept out of shot as far as possible. A quick word with the neighbours is a good idea.

Can a drone see inside my loft?

No. A drone shows the outside surfaces of the roof in close detail, but it can’t see under the coverings. We look in the loft from inside where it’s safe.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

What if it’s windy or raining on the day?

The flight waits for better weather. Wind and heavy rain are the two things that ground a small drone, so a new date is agreed with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.

Leave it or get it looked at?

From the ground, you’re guessing about most of a tall roof. Close-up photos show what’s really there. It’s far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. Around Newton Valence, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Drones, thermal imaging and Newton Valence roofs

If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Whatever the street in Newton Valence, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.
