Honest limits

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs

About our drone roof survey in Oakshott

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see inside. Where there’s safe access, we look in the roof space too, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most frequently book us about lifted or split lead flashings and tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack.

Villages like Oakshott often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Finding them now means less to put right. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Oakshott, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Drones, thermal imaging and Oakshott roofs

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Whatever the street in Oakshott, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.

How it works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Rural addresses near Oakshott can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Related advice

Do you need a drone roof survey in Oakshott?

After storms, owners want to know what has moved. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

People typically book a survey after spotting something like this:

  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots

The streets around a church such as Church of St Peter and St Paul are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

What to check before booking

  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included

Oakshott questions

Is drone flying allowed in Oakshott?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Is my home in Oakshott listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

What if it rains on the day?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. We’ll rearrange with you if the weather is not right.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

What happens next?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.
