Leave it or get it looked at?
Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller, whatever height the roof is. Around Steep, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Steep
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you are worried about worn lead at chimneys and walls and cracked mortar along the ridge, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a small place like Steep, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
After the visit, you get a report with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

When you need someone else
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers

- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors

What a drone roof survey looks like in Steep
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If you look after a building like Steep Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Steep questions
Is Steep within the area you cover?
Yes, Steep is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Steep is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.
Does someone need to be in?
That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.
Does the weather affect a drone survey?
We do not fly in strong wind or a downpour. Whether we can fly depends on the conditions on the day. If we cannot fly, we’ll arrange another day.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Around Steep, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
How to book
Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Advice
Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that.

What a survey costs
When we price a survey, we consider:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Which survey package you book
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
What to let us know when you get in touch
We will typically ask about:
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The property’s address and postcode
Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.
Practical tips
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Let us know what you want to see
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.
Every so frequently, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
