DIY checks: what’s safe

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Drone roof survey in Tye

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and flashings that have come away.

Villages like Tye often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Tye: your questions answered

Will you come out to Tye?

Yes. Tye is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

How do I find out if my home in Tye is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

What if my home is near an airport?

It depends on the airspace at your address. Inside a flight restriction zone, we need permission first. Allow a little extra time if your home is close to an airport.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in Tye?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.

Can the drone do thermal imaging?

The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is a separate check, included in our Premium Survey.

When does the report arrive?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.

How it works

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Somewhere like Tye needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

What this survey can’t tell you

A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:

  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Before and after the survey

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Let us know the exact address when booking
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Move stored items away from the hatch

Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Our packages start from £150, with VAT included. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

Getting in touch

Some details help us recommend the right survey and price. When you get in touch, it’s useful to mention:

  • What made you get in touch
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email, let us know about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Drone roof surveys in Tye: local notes

Tye is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Anyone responsible for a site like Mill Rythe Junior School will know that big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Peter, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. Historic houses such as Warblington Castle, about 2 miles north, show how far back building around Tye goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Tye is about 3 miles south of Havant, in Hampshire. In Tye, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Tye is one of the places in Hampshire we cover for drone roof surveys.

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
