Airspace, weather and Dean roofs
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Peter, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Dean
A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there’s safe access, we look in the roof space too, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. Typical surveys look at blocked valleys and parapet gutters and storm damage on steep or tall roofs, across flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.
Villages like Dean often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

The survey, step by step
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey typically takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a hamlet or village like Dean, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

FAQs for Dean
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Dean?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How do I find out if my home in Dean is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Usually, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

Checking the roof from ground level
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Dean
Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Leaves, silt and plant growth build up unseen, until water overflows inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
If you look after a building such as Bishops Waltham Infant School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
What to check before booking
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- What experience they bring
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
Why act early in Dean
On a tall building, problems are often found only when water comes in. By that stage the damage has spread inside. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
