Drone roof survey in Calshot
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it isn’t safe. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs, and people most often book us about blocked valleys and parapet gutters and chimney tops in poor condition.
Villages like Calshot frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

What else we do in Calshot
Can I check my roof myself?
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
What happens on the day
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Calshot, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared

Drone roof surveys in Calshot: local notes
Calshot is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Historic houses such as Osborne House, about 4.9 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Calshot goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Calshot is about 4 miles north of Cowes, in Hampshire. In Calshot, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our Hampshire coverage includes Calshot and the places around it. Southampton is in our area too.

What we are asked to look at in Calshot
Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Leaves, silt and plant growth build up unseen, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
We’re frequently asked to look at:
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
If you live in an older home near St George, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Before booking anyone
- Are they insured for the work?
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.
Ridges and hips
The ridge takes wind from both sides. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Calshot
Is drone flying allowed in Calshot?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Will you come out to Calshot?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
What insurance do you have?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
How soon will I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.
