- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

About our drone roof survey in Hunton
From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, since that is where leaks and condensation frequently show first. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. We survey tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and fragile roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are chimney tops in poor condition and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below.
Villages like Hunton often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
Drones, thermal imaging and Hunton roofs
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
If you live in an older home near Church of St James, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Around Hunton, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.

What a survey costs
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:
- Roof area
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.
What we need to know
There is no need for technical words. It’s enough to let us know:
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
When you are ready to go ahead, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. From there it is a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
What happens if roof problems are left?
With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. Older cottages and farmhouses around Hunton can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Hunton: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Hunton is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Are there drone restrictions around Hunton?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
How long does the survey take?
It usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You’ll then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
When does the report arrive?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
How it works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around Hunton can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
