Drone roof survey in Longstock

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. Common reasons to book are ponding and splits on a high flat roof and vegetation in valleys and gutters, on valleys and parapet gutters, fragile roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

Somewhere as small as Longstock, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

What you can safely check yourself

It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Why get it checked now?

From the ground, you’re guessing about most of a tall roof. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos. It’s far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. In a small place like Longstock, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

What we cannot see

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

The survey, step by step

Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Around Longstock, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Drones, thermal imaging and Longstock roofs

Within a mile and a half or so of Longstock there are several hotels, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, frequently have flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

Anyone responsible for a site like Test Valley School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Longstock means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Longstock

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Longstock?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover smaller places like Longstock?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.

What will the report tell me?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.

Will you photograph next door’s garden?

We point the camera at your roof only. Neighbouring homes and gardens aren’t the subject. A quick word with the neighbours is a good idea.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, including VAT.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Before and after the survey

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace

Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later.

Keep the loft space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow.
