Roof surveys in Longstock: local notes
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Take a building like Test Valley School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Roof survey in Longstock
Many homes have several roofs, not just one. Flat roofs over extensions, garages and dormers are common. They’re included alongside the main roof, looking for ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands. Flat roofs frequently need attention long before the main roof, so they deserve a careful look. A felt roof often lasts around 15 to 20 years, and GRP up to about 30. If you’re worried about leaking gutter joints and downpipes and lifted, split or missing lead flashings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Longstock are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Hidden gutters and valleys can fail without warning. An overflow there sends water indoors. We look at them before they cause trouble. Around Longstock, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

When you need someone else
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)

Signs you need a roof survey in Longstock
Flashings seal the joints where a roof meets a wall or chimney. Over time lead flashings split, lift or work loose, and mortar fillets crack away from the wall. Missing lead isn’t unusual either, as thieves target it.
Problems we come across frequently include:
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
- Worn or blocked valleys
- Flashings that have come away from the wall
- Standing water on a flat roof
If you live near a park like Longstock Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What they will not be able to tell you
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
It is useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book, as it helps us focus the survey.

What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney stacks
Damp on a chimney breast inside often starts with the stack outside. We check the flashings and mortar for the cause.
Natural slate
Slate is common on older homes in London and South East England. Widespread slipping normally points to corroded nails, and we say how widespread it looks.
How it works
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older roofs in small places like Longstock can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Preparing for the visit
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Longstock: your questions answered
Is Longstock within the area you cover?

Do you look in the roof space?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
What does a roof survey cost?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
What does a roof survey include?
Every part of the roof we can safely see: the slates or tiles, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and roof space. Higher packages add moisture detection, structural checks, thermal imaging and a drone where it applies.
