How a thermal roof survey works in Longstock

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. Common reasons to book are patches of heat loss across the roof and leaks far from where the stain appears, on pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and commercial roofs.

Villages like Longstock often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Longstock

We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the roof.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

Airspace, weather and Longstock roofs

Within a mile and a half or so of Longstock there are several hotels, and like offices and blocks, hotels frequently sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Take a building like Test Valley School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Longstock means lost rooms as well as repairs.

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like Longstock needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Booking a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Longstock

Will you come out to Longstock?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Longstock?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, and moisture readings are used to check it.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

How soon will I get the report?

Each package has its own report time. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, tell us as you book.

Are you insured?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

What does the report include?

A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

What a survey costs

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • Roof area
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Booking your survey

We will usually ask about:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • What made you get in touch
  • Anything about access we should know

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or email us. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Different roofs, different checks

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We take that into account and check findings with moisture readings.

Before and after the survey

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains

Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, for instance electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

What you can safely check yourself

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
