Stockbridge Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof for Stockbridge, from an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photos.
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Heat escaping through the roof
Thermal roof surveys in Stockbridge: local notes
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Peter, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Take a building like Stockbridge Primary & Pre-School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

How a thermal roof survey works in Stockbridge
Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There’s an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. If you are worried about damp around chimneys and parapets and ceilings that feel colder in places, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions alike.
Somewhere as small as Stockbridge, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Useful tips for Stockbridge property owners
You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Talk to us about the weather when booking
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
If you’re buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether that’s asking for work or discussing the price.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Stockbridge
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
For hotels and guest houses around Stockbridge, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it pays to find faults before guests do.
What to check before booking
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It normally takes an hour or two for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Around Stockbridge, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
How to prepare
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Water under felt or asphalt can stay hidden for years. Thermal imaging helps suggest where it is, given suitable conditions on the day.
When you need someone else
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Proving moisture from the images alone
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
Checking the roof from ground level
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.

You will get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
