How a drone roof survey works in Bentworth

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We’re often asked to look into wind damage high on the roof and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, across flat roofs on upper floors, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Older buildings in small places like Bentworth may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

DIY checks: what’s safe

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

Drone roof surveys around Bentworth

Bentworth is about 3 miles from Lasham Airfield, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

For an older house near a landmark like St. Mary's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Take a building like St Mary's Bentworth Church of England Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Hall Place, about 0.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Bentworth. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.

Bentworth is about 3 miles west of Alton, in Hampshire. Whether the building in Bentworth is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Our Hampshire coverage includes Bentworth. We also survey roofs in Reading.

Tips that help

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

How it works

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. All told, expect between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Around Bentworth, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe

Bentworth: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Bentworth?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is drone flying allowed in Bentworth?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Lasham Airfield is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.

What if it rains on the day?

It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions are not right, we’ll talk to you about another date.

What’s in the report?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes an hour or two at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. We will confirm the timing when booking.
