Drone roof survey in Hartley Wespall

Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, across tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Older buildings in small places like Hartley Wespall may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Drone roof surveys in Hartley Wespall: local notes

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Stratfield Saye House, about 2.3 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hartley Wespall. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Hartley Wespall

After storms, owners want to know what has moved. It is hard to tell from below what has shifted. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof

Take a building like Sherfield School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • What experience they bring
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • When you will get the report
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey

What to expect from a roof survey

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks

What we do, step by step

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit normally takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere as small as Hartley Wespall, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

How to prepare

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Let us know where we can park nearby

Advice

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Hartley Wespall

Will you come out to Hartley Wespall?

Yes, Hartley Wespall is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Are there drone restrictions around Hartley Wespall?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

What insurance do you have?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

What’s in the report?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

What happens after the survey?

You receive the written report by email, with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. We record what we find with photos.
