Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Wells-in-the-Field
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, like old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. Typical surveys look at flashings that have come away and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, on fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
Villages like Wells-in-the-Field frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly.

Useful tips for Wells-in-the-Field property owners
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Let us know the exact address when booking
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Wells-in-the-Field
Will you come out to Wells-in-the-Field?
Yes. Wells-in-the-Field is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Is my home in Wells-in-the-Field listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
How long will you be at the property?
It usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Time for the pre-flight checks is included.
What’s in the report?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put by urgency where it matters.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Wells-in-the-Field?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for the job before booking. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Will I get photos?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
Honest limits
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Chimney stacks
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
When to book a survey in Wells-in-the-Field
Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.
Problems we come across often include:
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
If you look after a building like Whitchurch Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
What to check before booking

- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
Roof by roof
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate normally means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.
The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes about one to two hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older rural homes like those around Wells-in-the-Field can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Drone roof surveys in Wells-in-the-Field: local notes
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
For an older house near a landmark like St Nicholas' Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
