About our drone roof survey in Townsend

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks, and the problems we are asked to look at most are standing water on a flat roof and slipped or missing slates on a high roof.

In a small place like Townsend, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Leave it or get it looked at?

With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. For an older or listed building in a place like Townsend, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Drone roof surveys around Townsend

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

If you look after a building such as The Hurst School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. The Vyne lies about 4.7 miles east, so building around Townsend goes back a long way. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Take an older house close to Church of St Catherine: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Townsend is about 3 miles south-west of Tadley, in Hampshire. Roofs in Townsend get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Hampshire. Our Hampshire coverage includes Townsend and the places around it. Our Reading page covers surveys nearby.

How the survey works

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey usually takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a hamlet or village like Townsend, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

For landlords and managing agents

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

Roof by roof

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is typically out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Townsend questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Townsend?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Are there drone restrictions around Townsend?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

What insurance do you have?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • Height and safe access
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • How big the roof is
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Helping us price your survey

We’ll normally ask about:

  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date

We survey roofs seven days a week. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
