Drone roof survey in Blackhill: what you get
Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. Typical surveys look at moss building up on slopes and in gutters and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, on tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors.
Villages like Blackhill frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photograph. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.
Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
How the survey changes by roof type
Valleys and parapet gutters
Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. You can’t see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed ahead of time. We survey on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Blackhill. For a price for a let property or a block, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How the survey works
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a village or hamlet like Blackhill, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice
Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Drone roof surveys around Blackhill
Historic houses such as Landford Manor, about 2.7 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Blackhill goes. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you look after a building like Wellow School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

FAQs for Blackhill
Will you come out to Blackhill?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is drone flying allowed in Blackhill?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
How long is the visit?
Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The report is sent afterwards by email.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
