Drone roof survey in Wintershill
From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there’s safe access, we look in the roof space too, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and ridge and hip pieces working loose.
Some older homes in villages like Wintershill are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

How the survey works
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older roofs in small places like Wintershill can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Note where any stains or damp appear

FAQs for Wintershill
Do you cover smaller places like Wintershill?
Yes, Wintershill is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
How do I find out if my home in Wintershill is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
What if my home is near an airport?
It depends on the airspace at your address. Inside a flight restriction zone, we need permission first, which can add time. Allow a little extra time if your home is close to an airport.
How quickly is the report sent?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Will I get photos?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Airspace, weather and Wintershill roofs
The flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport comes within about 2 miles of Wintershill. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.
If you look after a building such as Wyvern Technology College, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What we look for on each type of roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.
Ridges and hips
Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

Checking the roof from ground level
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Wintershill
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.
Common reasons to book include:
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
Around Wintershill, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- Are they insured for the work?
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, for these reasons:
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Roof area
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
