How a drone roof survey works in Wherwell
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We will tell you if another approach would work better. We survey chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most often book us about slates or tiles shifted by high winds and loose ridge and hip tiles.
Some older homes in villages like Wherwell are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Wherwell: your questions answered
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Wherwell?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Wherwell?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Wherwell?
To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know the address and what you want to find out. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before you book, based on the roof’s size, access and package. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Do you look in the loft space?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.
How the survey changes by roof type
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.
DIY checks: what’s safe
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
What we can’t see
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Tall and steep roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
How it works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Around Wherwell, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Advice
Do you need a drone roof survey in Wherwell?
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.
Common reasons to book include:
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter and Holy Cross, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- What happens after the report arrives
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.
Flying and imaging in Wherwell
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Wherwell Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
