How the survey changes by roof type

Clay plain and peg tiles

Clay tiles are common on older South East homes, and some have Kent peg tiles held by pegs. Rotten pegs and battens let tiles move, leaving gaps along the courses.

Concrete interlocking tiles

Concrete interlocking tiles are common on post-war and newer homes. They’re heavy and hard-wearing, but their surfaces weather over the years.

Roof survey in Wherwell: what you get

Our report is written in plain English, not jargon. Each defect is described with photographs and a recommendation, and we rank them by urgency where that helps. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where it applies and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. We survey chimney stacks, natural slate and ridges, hips and valleys, and the problems we are asked to look at most are lifted, split or missing lead flashings and water stains on rafters and ceiling joists.

Older buildings in small places like Wherwell may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

How we price roof surveys

To price your survey, we check:

  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Which survey package you book
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details. The price is agreed before a date is set.

What to let us know when you get in touch

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

To book a survey, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. We’ll confirm the price before booking.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Wherwell

Landlords, agents and building managers in Wherwell and across Hampshire can book any of our surveys. For a price for a let property or a block, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Why get it checked now?

Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. A survey lets you deal with things in order of urgency, rather than waiting for something to fail. Older cottages and farmhouses around Wherwell can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

What a roof survey looks like in Wherwell

Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Homes near green spaces such as Longstock Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Peter and Holy Cross, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Anyone responsible for a site like Wherwell Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Useful tips for Wherwell property owners

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
  • Let us know about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
  • Keep the report with your property records
  • Take photos of any leaks as they happen

The Premium Survey includes a 12-month follow-up. It helps you see whether anything has changed.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. A stuffy loft collects condensation, and it can wet timbers and insulation. Keep insulation clear of eaves vents.

Questions from Wherwell

Do you cover smaller places like Wherwell?

Yes, Wherwell is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can a landlord with a rental near Andover station book a roof survey?

Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.

How many surveys have you done?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos was banned in UK construction in 1999, so older buildings may have it. Our report notes any materials that might, and recommends a specialist asbestos surveyor looks at them.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.

What happens on the day

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes between one and two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. In a small place like Wherwell, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
  5. You get a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
