How electronic leak detection works in Wherwell
ELD is a way of pinpointing breaches in a flat roof’s waterproofing membrane. It uses a small electrical current which can only get through the membrane at a breach. It can find holes too small to spot by eye so your roofer knows exactly where to repair. You get a written report with photos of each breach found. We survey liquid-applied waterproofing, roof terraces and balconies and flat roof membranes, and people most often book us about leaks showing away from the breach and leaks under green or ballasted roofs.
In a small place like Wherwell, a flat roof can stand in the open, so edges, upstands and laps take a beating. Older felt roofs, often around 15–20 years in life, show it first. Rubber and GRP last longer, though trims and joints still need a look. Exposed edges are normally the first part of a flat roof to go.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

What we do, step by step
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect as long as needed for the membrane area and the build-up, which we set out in the quote. Older roofs in small places like Wherwell can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You let us know about the roof and where water is showing.
- We check whether the membrane and build-up suit ELD.
- We choose a low-voltage or high-voltage method to match the roof.
- The membrane is tested and breaches are found.
- You get a report with photos of each breach.
Before we arrive
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Book a survey
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or email us when you are ready.

Practical tips
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Keep a note of leaks after rain
- Avoid repeated repairs without finding the cause
- Act on new leaks promptly
- Share any drawings of the roof
Wet insulation may need attention after a leak. That’s something to discuss with your roofer and other checks can help judge it.
ELD before paving, ballast or planting goes on is worth considering. It’s easier to find holes before more layers are added.
What we look for on each type of roof
Green and ballasted roofs
ELD is easier on a new roof before it is covered.
EPDM rubber roofs
EPDM rubber roofs often last 30–50 years, but punctures and seam failures still happen.
What electronic leak detection looks like in Wherwell
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Next to the main roofs there is normally a flat roof somewhere, whether on an extension, a garage or a commercial unit. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
Anyone responsible for a site like Wherwell Primary School will know that a large flat roof with plenty of outlets and rooflights has many places where a membrane can fail. If you own a rental within reach of Andover station, a flat roof over a rented flat is easy to forget until the tenant reports a leak.

FAQs for Wherwell
How do I find out if my home in Wherwell is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you cover Wherwell?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and Wherwell is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.
Are you insured?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Will you repair the leak?
No. We test the membrane and report. The report shows where each breach is so your roofer can fix them.
Do you look in the loft space?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Do you need electronic leak detection in Wherwell?
Flat roof membranes can be punctured by foot traffic, dropped tools or debris. Some are too small to see but water still finds them.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- A flat roof leak that cannot be traced
- Damage from equipment installers
- Breaches hidden under paving or planting
- New membranes needing a check before handover
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Peter and Holy Cross, the flat roofs on later extensions tend to wear out long before the main roof.
What to check before booking
- What insurance they carry
- Is VAT included in the price?
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Will the report include photos?
