New roof snagging around Wherwell
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whether you’re buying or checking new roofing work, knowing the materials helps make sense of what the inspection finds. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
If you let a flat or house near Andover station, a survey before purchase, or before signing off a new roof, saves surprises once a tenant moves in. Take an older house close to Church of St Peter and Holy Cross: the roof may have had decades of patch repairs, and the survey shows where they are.

New roof snagging for homes and businesses in Wherwell
Our inspection covers the slates or tiles, ridges, verges, hips and valleys, along with the flashings and ventilation. We check the underlay at the eaves where it’s visible as well as the gutters. The report sets out what we found with photographs. We also note debris left behind and any damage to other parts of the building. We survey replacement roofs, new-build homes and ridges and verges, and people most frequently book us about gaps at new flashings and cracked or slipped new tiles or slates.
Somewhere as small as Wherwell, older cottages, farmhouses and converted buildings often sit beside a few newer homes. Village roofs can be clay tile, slate, stone or even thatch on some older buildings. Whether you are buying or have just had a roof replaced, each material has its own checks, and thatch is a specialist material, so we report on what can be seen. Older roofs may also have old felt underlay or none, and fixings that have done a long stint.
What you get is a clear record of the new roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later.

What we do, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much new work there is to check. Older rural homes like those around Wherwell can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First, we note any deadlines and concerns.
- We inspect as far as safe access allows.
- Each detail at ridges, verges, valleys and flashings is looked at.
- We check the gutters, lower roofs and walls for debris or damage.
- We send a written report you can pass on.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Questions from Wherwell
Will you come out to Wherwell?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Does the weather affect the survey?
Light rain does not normally stop a survey. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather is not suitable.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
How much is new roof snagging?

Why act early in Wherwell
It’s easier to get snags sorted while money is still owed. Once the job is paid and the roofer has moved on, getting them back can take longer. A snagging report gives you something specific to raise. In a small place like Wherwell, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.
Landlords and agents in Wherwell book surveys as well as householders. A written report with photographs gives you a clear record of the new roof.
What you can safely check yourself
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
