About our gutter survey in Wherwell

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that typically means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a written report with photographs. Common reasons to book are gutters that have fallen out of line and cracked or loose downpipes, on valley gutters, outlets and hoppers and parapet and box gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Wherwell, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Different roofs, different checks

Box and secret gutters

Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. Outlets, linings and overflows are checked as far as access allows.

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Lead linings are common in valleys and parapet gutters on older houses. A split lining can leak straight into the building.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Wherwell

How do I find out if my home in Wherwell is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

I let a flat near Andover station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.

Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?

Yes. Surveys are carried out on any day of the week. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange a day.

Do you look in the roof space?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it is safe. We inspect what can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Does the season matter for a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait, because the walls take the water.

When to book a survey in Wherwell

Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Every autumn, trees fill gutters with leaves, twigs and seeds, and they collect at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Leaks at the gutter joints
  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Choked outlets or hopper heads
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter

Homes near green spaces such as Longstock Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

What a good roof survey covers

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Wherwell

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter and Holy Cross, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Take a building like Wherwell Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.

Can I check my roof myself?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

How the survey works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it usually takes about one to two hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like Wherwell, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and vantage points.
  3. We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it’s safe to see them.
  4. We look in the roof space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Advice

Why act early in Wherwell

A blocked valley or parapet gutter does not spill harmlessly. It can overflow into the building, often in the heaviest rain. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Older and listed buildings around Wherwell may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
