Roof survey in Hyde

Across London and South East England, roofs differ widely. If your home is a Victorian terrace, it may have Welsh slate, a butterfly roof and parapet gutters, and many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles instead. We adapt the survey to the roof in front of us. Some older homes have clay tiles, and many have a flat-roofed extension as well. Each part is checked in the way that suits it. If you’ve noticed slates or tiles that have slipped or broken and water stains on rafters and ceiling joists, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, the roof space and flat roofs alike.

Around Hyde, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. It is the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Checking the roof from ground level

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
  • Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
  • Stay off ladders and the roof
  • Keep a record of damp patches and dates

We email the report to you. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Each finding is set out in plain English.

After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Prompt repairs stop small problems growing.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Homes around Hyde frequently have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.

  1. You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
  2. We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
  4. Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.

How to prepare

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Advice

Hyde homes and their roofs

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Living close to St. Cross Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. For an older house near a landmark such as St Bartholomew's Church, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Hyde is about 1 mile north of Winchester, in Hampshire. We visit Hyde as part of our work across Hampshire, for homes and businesses alike. Our Hampshire coverage includes Hyde. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

We survey roofs across the SO23, SO22 and SO20 postcode area for roof surveys. That includes homes and businesses on Elm Road, Swan Lane and City Road and the roads around them. Close by, we survey roofs in Abbotts Barton (1 mile north-east), Winchester (1 mile south), Weeke (1 mile west), Highcliffe (1 mile south-east) and Bar End (1 mile south). Further out, we also cover Eastleigh (7 miles south), Andover (12 miles north-west), Totton (13 miles south-west), Chandler's Ford (7 miles south-west), Hedge End (11 miles south) and Romsey (9 miles south-west).

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

When to book a survey in Hyde

A blocked gutter does more harm than it looks. Leaves, moss and silt build up, the gutter overflows and water soaks the walls. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building.

Typical things we are asked to look at include:

  • Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
  • Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings

Take a building like St Bede Church of England Primary School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

What to expect from a roof survey

Your questions about roof surveys in Hyde

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hyde?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can a landlord with a rental near Winchester station book a roof survey?

Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.

What insurance do you have?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Can you tell me how long my roof will last?

We do not give a number of years. The report explains the condition of each part and the signs of wear, and we say what needs attention and how urgently.

Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?

Yes, we inspect your part of the roof. We can only look at neighbouring roofs as far as access allows. Shared chimneys and party-wall upstands are looked at from your side.

What’s covered in a roof inspection?

All the main parts of the roof: coverings, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and the loft. Higher packages add moisture detection, structural checks, thermal imaging and a drone where applicable.

How quickly will I get the report?

Premium reports arrive the same day, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Photos are included.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Hyde

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.
