Roof survey in Bar End
A roof survey tells you what condition your roof is in, before small faults become big ones. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it’s safe to get in. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations. Where it is relevant, the recommendations are prioritised by urgency. If you’re worried about lifted, split or missing lead flashings and cracked mortar along the ridge, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a small place like Bar End, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What a roof survey doesn’t cover
It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Your questions about roof surveys in Bar End
Will you come out to Bar End?
Yes. Bar End is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is my home in Bar End listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?
Yes, the part you own or can give access to. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
What’s the best way to book?
Simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.
What do you check on a roof survey?
Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it is safe. The report includes photos and recommendations.

Local roofs in Bar End
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you own a rental within reach of Winchester station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. For an older house near a landmark such as All Saints, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. If you live near a park like St. Cross Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

What we look for on each type of roof
Natural slate
Inside the roof space, we check what’s under the slates. There may be old felt underlay, or none at all on very old roofs.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Interlocking tiles on shallow roofs depend on their laps and fixings. Lifted or cracked tiles are noted.
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Bar End can have low, tight loft spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

Advice
Leave it or get it looked at?
Roof faults rarely stay the same size. A single gap lets water onto the timbers underneath, and wet timber starts to decay. Finding it early keeps the work smaller. For older village homes like those around Bar End, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Checking the roof from the ground
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
